Warpaint’s 2016 album "Heads Up" was recorded after the band spent the previous year apart working on solo projects. Reuniting in January, the band went into the studio and started to work on their new LP with producer Jacob Bercovici, whom they had worked on their debut EP "Exquisite Corpse." The album was recorded in House on The Hill studio in downtown LA, their home studios and Papap’s Palace and for the first time ever, recorded in pairs and alone rather than as a full band. This ability to share ideas so rapidly allowed the band to achieve a greater sonic breadth.
In the past they have paired moodiness with bumped-up tempos and sinewy beats. On this new album the music's no less dark but it has an additional rhythmic urgency and tension that can be surprising. Of course, confounding expectations has been part of Warpaint's m.o. since the band formed in 2004. And so when the band convened to make their third studio album, Heads Up, they shared a common goal: to make a faster, dance-oriented record.
