After Stark become the superhero known as Iron Man, Rhodes was put under pressure by the military to take possession of Stark's armour. Despite being against this plan, he saw Stark's behaviour becoming more and more reckless, and had no choice but to take the Mark II suit before handing it over to the military. Soon enough, Justin Hammer upgraded the suit and rebranded it as Rhodes as War Machine.
