Rubber Factory is the third studio album by American rock duo The Black Keys. It was self-produced by the band and was released on September 7, 2004. The album was recorded in an abandoned tire-manufacturing factory in the group's hometown of Akron, Ohio.
Guitarist/vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer/producer Patrick Carney have upped the ante on this album, sharpening their sound and strengthening their songwriting skills to create a surprising redefinition of the pair without losing the essence of who they are and where their music comes from.
Having clearly ingrained blues roots, Rubber Factory portrays that the band were clearly raised with great taste and reflective knowledge of classic rock allowing them to instinctually create a well rounded, creative indie rock sound. A grimy, lo-fi example of work, the bands version of unpolished rock shines through in the contrast of a slide-guitar showcase with heartbreaking lyrics on songs such as “The Lengths” to the big, gritty, feedback laden sounds of “Aeroplane Blues”.
Using traditional blues-rock songwriting structures, the band have been able to create lyrically fulfilling tracks which draw on nostalgic influence while still being fresh, raw and exciting. They also know how much sound matters and place importance on not only how it’s played, but how it’s recorded, allowing this album to be an unvarnished portrayal of timeless tributes.
