“When I was just starting out in the industry, there was a legendary sculptor in Japan named Mr. Yusuke Takayanagi. I still vividly remember how shocked I was at the design sense of his work “Sallasenien,” which was published in Creature Core by the late Mr. Yasushi Nirasawa. I admired him, and now, nearly 30 years after I started working in the same industry, I wanted to revive a new “Sallasenien,” incorporating my own style into the work. The back story is that the original piece was broken before it was molded, and I learned that no one had a copy of it with a high quality of perfection, which gave me the impetus to re-create it. Born in Fukuoka, Japan, and now based in Los Angeles, Akihito Ikeda is a renowned special effects make-up artist and designer. He won the TV Champion's Special Effects Make-Up King Competition three times consecutively starting in 1988 and the Avant-Garde Make-up competition the same year. Akihito served as the lead Kaiju Designer for Ultraman Cosmos before moving to the U.S. in 2002. Since then, he has worked on major films like Pacific Rim, The Chronicles of Narnia series, Terminator Salvation, Iron Man 2, and Alice in Wonderland, showcasing his exceptional talent in Hollywood.
