The Return is the debut studio album by Zambian born, Australian singer/songwriter Sampa the Great (Sampa Tembo). It was released in September 13, 2019 and peaked at number 12 on the ARIA Charts.

At the AIR Awards of 2020, the album won Best Independent Hip Hop Album or EP and at the ARIA Music Awards of 2020, the album received four nominations, including ARIA Award for Album of the Year. Sampa the Great won Best Female Artist, Best Independent Release and Best Hip Hop Release for The Return.

The long awaited debut album by the poet, rapper and songwriter, The Return focus’ on themes of self-empowerment, personal soul-searching and oneness with race and culture. The album strongly draws on traditional soul, jazz and African influences but screams out as a power anthem for todays modern climate.

A vastly distinctive sound is created by Tembo through the use of multilingual lyrics, fusing hip-hop with almost etherial vocal performances. The album effectively draws on interesting collaborations and pairs electronic beats with time-honoured drumming patterns to fashion tracks which feel both strikingly relevant and surprisingly ageless.

Though it is a hip-hop album with all the great makings - intricate beats, brilliant flows, thought provoking lyrics, detailed grooves and authenticity, “The Return” goes further. It features hints of soul, jazz, R&B and Africa, and coupled with her smart lyricism, Sampa offers an immersive listening experience. Her raps are stylish and purposeful and it's genuine when she raps about things like freedom and heritage.

Throughout the album, Sampa's lyrics hit hard, each bar is engaging and the beats and melodies are powerful. This release stands strong and leaves you wondering what’s next for one of Australia’s most exciting new talents.
