Robert Wyatt – Different Every Time Volume 1: Ex Machina 2xLP Vinyl Record

Born in 1945, Robert Wyatt-Ellidge was the founding member of the influential bands Soft Machine and Matching Mole, initially a kit drummer and singer before becoming paraplegic following an accident fall, which led him to abandon band work and follow a forty-year solo career.

Released in 2014, "Different Every Time" is a career retrospective spanning Soft Machine to the present day. Curated by Robert Wyatt, the release serves as a companion to his biography of the same name by Marcus O'Dair. The compilation is split between an LP of Wyatt as the frontman, and Wyatt as the guest, with the first side beginning as a 19 minute track by Soft Machine, the prog-rock ensemble that he played drums and sang for from 1966 to 1971. Followed by a couple of shorter pieces from his subsequent band Matching Mole, the sounds hint at his transition into work as a solo headliner. The rest of the first LP is full of excellent material from his solo career, serving as an example of how wide Wyatt's range of moods can be, from sadly meditative, depressingly blissful, jolly, and even terrifying. The second LP in the release is a selection of Wyatt's score of guest appearances on other people's records, which further showcases how sonically versatile and prolific he was as a collaborator.

Pressed on 2 Classic Black Vinyl Records. Includes MP3s.
