2013’s "Like Clockwork” is the sixth release from Queens of The Stone Age. The lineup consists of Josh Homme and friends, featuring the return of band members Dave Grohl, Nick Oliveri and Mark Lanegan, plus guest appearances from Elton John, Trent Reznor, Alex Turner, Jake Shears and James Lavelle.

With "Like Clockwork," Homme has written the most intense, personal and beautiful songs of his career. While the thunder of Queens past is still evident, there are a number of gorgeous ballads, meditations on time passing, the struggle to create art, and the nearness of mortality. The music features some of Homme's finest guitar work, at times recalling past greats such as Brian May or George Harrison, at other times uniquely his own.

Queens of the Stone age have a unique talent for releasing albums that feel like instant classics, standing as a powerful testament to this is 2013’s “…Like Clockwork." Since Josh Homme formed Queens of the Stone Age (following the breakup of Kyuss), the band have cemented themselves as one of the biggest names in both stoner and alternative rock today. My introduction to the band, “…Like Clockwork" stands to me as their finest to this day.

The bands constantly changing lineup allows for some impressive contributions on “…Like Clockwork.” Some standout appearances include Dave Grohl's distinctive drums pounding on a handful of tracks, the smooth bass workings of Michael Shuman, fantastic performances on keyboard and guitar from Dean Fertitaand even a superstar appearance from Sir Elton John, lending the albums musicianship a certain unique charm.

Though the album boasts impressive features, the main presence is and always will be Homme. His muscular musicianship is the heart of “…Like Clockwork” and throughout the album we see his signature catchy guitar riffs, genius melodies and immersive lyricism. Homme uses his songwriting on “…Like Clockwork” to take the album to an engaging, passionate and emotional place.

Though the only member to appear on all releases is Homme, each song sounds like the workings of a well-aquatinted band. With tight performances and a stellar energy throughout "...Like Clockwork" shows no signs of Queens of The Stone Age slowing down (and they hasn’t since with their 2017 release of “Villains”).

Possibly one of the best stoner and alternative rock albums of recent times, "...Like Clockwork" is a must listen.
