Bossanova is the third studio album by American rock band Pixies. It was released on August 13, 1990.

A strange, yet accessible album influenced by surf and space rock, Bossanova focuses on lyrically referencing aspects of outer space including aliens and unidentified flying objects. Breaking out of their usual format to experiment with new sounds and ideas, the garage grunge sounds on this album are complemented by the skilful use of the theremin and echoey, drifting vocals creating an interesting and artistic contribution to Pixies catalog.

Still off the mainstream, Bossanova comes into its own with hard hitting guitars, measured and penetrating bass lines and a denser drum sound than displayed in their previous work. The surreal lyrics are ever present though and lead vocalist Black Francis openly admits that not even he entirely understands them at times. Although, content becomes almost irrelevant in these songs, as the defining factors are a throbbing, headache beat which takes you to a feverish dream state.

Formidable, grinding and mystifying, this album musically captives your imagination, taking you to another world and keeping you mesmerised from start to finish.
