Mac Miller - Circles 2xLP Vinyl Record (Clear Vinyl)
Released in 2020, “Circles” was originally conceived as a sister album to Mac Miller’s acclaimed 2018 work “Swimming.” Released posthumously, the album was completed with the assistance of Jon Brion, with whom Miller worked on “Swimming," the two had been working together on “Circles" at the time of his tragic passing. "Circles" stands as an optimistic epilogue to the life of an aspirational artist.
While sonically “Circles” is distinctly different to its predecessor, the album still features many of the hallmarks for which “Swimming" was hailed for. The album sees Miller further exploring his singing voice coupled with his talented skills as a rapper, live instrumentation and earnest, confessional lyrical content. It's a momentous final entry into the discography of an artist that remains at the centre of reimagining the limits of rap.

Staff Review:
Tragic and shocking, the death of hip-hop genius Mac Miller shook the music industry and broke the hearts of fans everywhere. Mac was truely unique in his approach to music, he flourished through relatable songwriting, playful compositions and a charming personality. Released just over a year after his death, 2020’s “Circles” is a beautiful celebration of an artist who - through all of life's challenges - delivered focused, iconic and emotionally rich music.
Releasing an album posthumously is a sensitive process. It has the potential to be a beautiful celebration of an artist's life and work, though on the other hand, it can seem insincere. Far from a “cash grab,” Mac Miller’s “Circles” embodies the signature style of the late artist. The album sounds complete, compelling and more importantly, just like a Mac Miller album should.
“Circles” is a display of Mac’s musicianship further developing. Genres beyond hip-hop are explored, jazz, RnB, soul, blues and funk flow through the organic sounds, intimate vocals and heartfelt compositions seen on his recent works. Many of “Circles” sounds were Mac’s own compositions: blissful synths lend songs character and texture, folky guitars create an intimate atmosphere, smooth basslines keep the groove and soft percussion gives the songs flow.
“Circles” also sees Mac further exploring his voice as a singer, his vulnerabilities are truely on display with intimate and passionate lyricism. Throughout the album, his voice bears emotions of pain and sadness, and his intricate lyrics are both intimate and compelling “that’s on me, I know, that’s on me, it’s all my fault.”
Mac no longer felt he had to prove himself as a rapper, his later albums, “Swimming” and “Circles,” see him unfolding as an extraordinarily skilful and confident musician. He shows that he's capable of gorgeous singing, genius songwriting, grand compositions and producing flawless songs. “Circles” is a compelling final album, giving fans closure for someone the world lost too soon.
