Kamaal Williams ‎- The Return LP Vinyl Record

The Return is the debut studio album by British musician and producer Kamaal Williams. It was released on May 25, 2018 under his own label Black Focus Records.

After the breakup of the band Yussef Kamaal, Williams sought to recreate the sound from the groups Black Focus work from 2016. Bassist Pete Martin, drummer Josh McKenzie and producer Richard Samuels came together to create an album structured around improvisation, drawing on the creative space found in jam session recordings by the musicians.

Clearly inspired the jazz-funk sounds of the 1970’s, the album is dotted with elements of psychedelia and hip-hop. This allows the more traditional details of the music to come into a modern setting, which feels both timeless and fresh. It is instrumentally based, showcasing the talents of all contributors successfully. While the bass and drums create a kicking tempo, the incorporation of vintage synths and strings push the sounds into a more floating, dreamlike space.
