Julie Doiron is a Canadian singer/songwriter from Moncton, New Brunswick. She's been the bass guitarist and co-vocalist for the Indie Rock band Eric's Trip since 1990, and has also released an impressive number of solo albums over her musical career.
Sung in French, Julie Doiron's Désormais album gives off somber tones, with minimalst, acoustic compositions throughout. With sparce fingerpicking and little accompaniment, the piece can't help but put you in a mellow, soothing mood. "Pour Toujours" captivates the listener with Doiron gently yet methodically plucking two-note intervals. Samples begin to pulse underneath the guitar, hinting at simple yet well considered musical layering. Doiron's voice carries the album, with her gentle yet passionate tones forming the perfect pairing to her instrumental minimalism, resulting in a piece that effortlessly makes it way into your soul one strum at a time.
Contrasting the Désormais album, Doiron's Heart And Crime is sung in English, a gift to listeners who feel they lose some of her soulful tones through translation. The album is painfully intimate, relying heavily on her finger-picking style, with little instrumentation added over Doiron's iconic vocals. There are occasional bursts of trumpet, piano, organ and drums, feeling well placed throughout the composition. It's a sensual album, with its soft and slow tones allowing any listener to tune in passively.
