Ever since his astonishing debut with the Drive-By Truckers in the early 2000s, Jason Isbell has been someone to watch. Here was a kid from a tiny town in Alabama who could sing, play guitar and write great songs with a wisdom, wit and swagger rarely seen even in the crowded Americana field.
"Live At Twist & Shout" is a live EP from the Jason Isbell and his backing band, The 400 Unit. Recorded at a Twist & Shout in-store, the EP serves as a significant artefact documenting the nascent stage of Isbell’s solo career. This release finds Isbell's band offering more nuanced backing than the Truckers, better befitting his troubadour approach. The sound's not a million miles from Isbell's former band, it's still earthy, twang-laden Americana, but nevertheless this represents a distinct progression.
