Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights LP Vinyl Record

NYC quartet Interpol’s debut album “Turn On The Bright Lights" is a filler-free, fully realised statement of intent. The album sees Interpol mixing the propulsive sonic backgrounds and emotional swells of early-'80s post-punk with unexpected bursts of melody and their own brand of wit to create one of the most exciting new sounds of the year.

Coasting on jagged minor-chord guitar melodies and huge emotional swells with a ton of high points along the way, “Turn On The Bright Lights” is the thrilling album modern followers of post-punk have been waiting for. From the driving "PDA" to the monumental "Untitled" and the haunting "Say Hello To The Angels", this elegant and rich collection is a triumph of fin-de-siecle melancholy and youthful force.

Staff Review:

New York’s early 2000’s rock scene seemed almost like a party, it was dominated the bright, dance-floor sounds of acts such as The Strokes, LCD Soundsystem and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. This left a vacancy for something darker and more melancholic, a vacancy that Interpol stepped into with 2002’s “Turn On The Bright Lights” - a passionate post-punk album with a distant mood and startlingly raw sound.

The lush production of “Turn On The Bright Lights” never under nor overstates any one sound.  Paul Banks sings his mature and witty lyricism with an atmospheric, baritone voice, somewhat similar to the likes of Joy Division. The powerful melodies from multiple, jangling guitars soar and the pairing of both smooth bass-lines and tight drums offer a hypnotic rhythm section.

Since forming in 1997, Interpol both built hype and established their sound, "Turn on the Bright Lights” features the refined sounds of a mature band. Their listening experience is immersive and one which rewards its audience with each listen. It's an album that gives back what you put in, the emotions might be initially daunting but a few listens will likely have you in-love with its bleak and disconnected nature.

At times, it’s difficult to believe that "Turn on the Bright Lights” is a debut due to how established and consistent the band sound. They achieve a mood that is persistent throughout, a unique and rewarding listening experience that is sure to offer something refreshing to fans of post-punk.
