Hellboy II: The Golden Army, released in 2008, expands the darkly imaginative world of Mike Mignola’s Dark Horse Comics. The sequel to 2004’s Hellboy, it is the second live-action film in the franchise, written and directed by Guillermo del Toro from a story co-created with Mignola. The film blends myth, fantasy, and superhero action, with Doug Jones delivering a haunting dual performance as both Abe Sapien and the ethereal Angel of Death.

During a pivotal moment in the story, Liz and Abe seek out the Bethmoora goblin master blacksmith, who leads them to the Angel of Death to reclaim a fragment of the cursed Golden Army spear. Confronted with a prophecy that Hellboy’s continued existence could spell humanity’s end, and that Liz herself would suffer most, she courageously pleads for his life. In a visually stunning and emotionally charged scene, the Angel removes the spear shard from Hellboy’s chest, leaving Liz with the solemn responsibility of giving him a reason to live, emphasising the film’s rich mix of peril, sacrifice, and hope.
