Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of "Awesome Mixtape #2” and “Music by Tyler Bates," Marvel Studios' "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" continues the team's adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is written and directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel as Baby Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Michael Rooker and many more! The film sees The Guardians fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill's true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favourite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes' aid as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand.
The soundtrack album contains a selection of songs chosen by James Gunn that would suit the story of the film narrative. One of the more obscure songs chosen was “Lake Shore Drive” by Aliota Haynes Jeremiah, a regional hit in the Midwest where Gunn grew up. His motivation was to include it in the soundtrack and rescue it from historical oblivion. Gunn has stated that the ELO opening track “Mr. Blue Sky” was "the perfect song to start the movie because it's really joyous, but there's a really dark underpinning to it," and felt it would go well with "the most hugely insane shot I've ever done". Gunn has also stated that Fleetwood Mac’s "The Chain" and Looking Glass’ "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)" were the two songs that were "the most deeply embedded into the fibres of the film”.
Tyler Bates returned to score "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" and as with
"Vol. 1," Bates wrote some of the score first so that Gunn could film to the music, as opposed to Bates scoring to the film. Recording for the score began in January 2017 at Abbey Road Studios. This film score and the Awesome Mix Volume 2 were initially released separately in April 2017, however, this release combines both albums for the ultimate Guardian's experience!
Pressed on Classic Black Vinyl. Tracks A 1-6, B 1-6 and C tracks 1-2 feature "Awesome Mix Vol. 2,” tracks C 3-8 and D 1-10 feature the films Score by Tyler Bates.

Quintessential to Marvel’s blockbuster “Guardians of the Galaxy” films is the iconic, uplifting and quirky songs of the aptly-named “Awesome Mix” “Vol. 1” and “Vol. 2", a superb collection of music composed by Tyler Bates. Since ending the first film with its protagonist, Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt) discovering a second mixtape, the suspense was set for fans to await both the second film and its soundtrack alike. Given a larger budget, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” had more freedom to employ what I believe stands as an overall stronger soundtrack and score than its revered predecessor.
All but a few songs of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” are hits from the 1970s. Carefully curated by writer and director James Gunn, these iconic songs provide more than first-class entertainment, they also give the viewer an insight into the personality of Peter Quill’s mother, Meredith. In the words of Gunn, “She’s a music lover, but she’s completely not elitist.” Portraying this brilliantly, the songs on the “Awesome Mix Vol. 2” that was given to Quill by his late mother tie into the themes of the film perfectly: quirky, fun, catchy and often pretty cheesy.
However, the soundtrack isn’t the only music to feature on "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.” Composed by Tyler Bates, the films Original Score is well-written and ties in magnificently with its scenes. Part of the reason for this brilliant relationship between the film and its score is because, like “Vol. 1," Bates scored some of the music prior to the films shooting so that Gunn could film to the music. The well-conducted orchestrations are perfect for a comic book movie, the bright and forcefully paced scores evoke powerful emotions and utilise the dynamic range of strings, horns, choirs and percussion to create an immersive and exhilarating experience that stands strong within "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and independently.
One of the most amusing, quirky, passionate and all round entertaining comic book films of recent years, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” boasts music that not only feature on the film but ties into its core. Gunn’s careful selection of nostalgic, iconic and loveable 70s songs alongside Bates’ brilliantly orchestrated compositions resonate with the viewer, the result is an incredibly engaging and memorable experience.
