Oldest daughter Charlie struggles to care for her sisters in the wake of the accident that took their parents, while each of the younger sisters narrates a volume of the series, taking place over a year. Hortense, age 11, is shy and likes to be alone;
Bettina, age 14, is good-hearted but temperamental;
Genevieve, age 16, is passionate about cooking and boxing.
This, the first volume, is narrated by youngest sister Enid and takes place in autumn. A free spirit, she enjoys wandering alone and talking to animals and anything she meets. Her best friend Gulliver is, like her, offbeat and creative. When Enid begins hearing ghost-like screams, the two friends embark on a scary adventure. These sisters are not perfect and they may not always get along, but in times of need, they can always count on one another.
