Transcend sonic boundaries—'Aufheben' is a hypnotic collision of psych tradition and global experimentation. Aufheben is a philosophical term drawn from Hegel, meaning to “abolish,” “preserve,” and “transcend”—and there’s no more fitting title for this expansive 2012 release from The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Recorded at Anton Newcombe’s Berlin studio and the historic East German “Studio East,” Aufheben marks a powerful convergence of the band’s signature neo-psychedelia with Eastern influences, textured electronics, and a rotating cast of collaborators.

The album features original BJM member Matt Hollywood, with contributions from Will Carruthers (Spacemen 3, Spiritualized), Constantine Karlis (Dimmer), Thibault Pesenti (Rockcandys), and vocals from Eliza Karmasalo sung in Finnish. It’s a mind-bending ride through droning rhythms, motorik grooves, and lush, meditative layers that feel both timeless and newly unearthed.

Formed in the early 1990s in San Francisco, The Brian Jonestown Massacre is led by Anton Newcombe and known for their genre-blurring blend of psychedelia, folk, shoegaze, and experimental rock. Their music often channels the spirit of The Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3, and early Pink Floyd, while maintaining a raw, DIY sensibility.
