Boards of Canada - Trans Canada Highway EP Vinyl Record
Trans Canada Highway is the sixth EP by Scottish electronic music duo Boards of Canada. Originally released by Warp Records on 29 May 2006. The EP peaked at number 4 on the UK Independent Albums Chart, number 8 on the UK Dance Albums Chart, and number 12 on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
On this EP, Boards of Canada seem to be reaching towards a new, more focused sound as compared to their previous works. Opener ‘Davyan Cowboy’, a track from their previous studio album; ‘The Campfire Headphase’, dispenses with ethereality in favour of a euphonious chime of fuzzed and chorused guitar Americana. It's a rainbow hued, psych-rock instrumental rather than the parched, monochrome ambience of old, and could almost be said to be catchy.
The other tracks on the EP are more traditional 'Boards of Canada' in their approach, although all reflect the American theme of the collection. ‘Under the Coke Sign’ and ‘Seen the Telegraph Lines’ are minute-length ambient interludes typical of their sound: drifting wafts of out-of-focus synth vapour that evaporate before you realise they are there, like an eagle disappearing into a blue cloudless sky above the unending ribbon of an American freeway. Ultimately what you've come to love and expect from a Boards of Canada album.
