Staff Review:
Truely aligned with the film, the Austin Powers "Goldmember Soundtrack" has all the funk, groove and humour of the 2000’s Mike Myers comedy.
Opening with Beyoncé’s catchy and danceable "Work It Out,” the scene of the 70s is set. The Destiny’s Child members song is a disco fuelled, R&B, dance club anthem with pop sensibilities. A large portion of these songs follow this template, which works in favour of the film. Appearances from artists such as Dr. Dre, Britney Spears and Soul Hooligan lend the soundtrack a distinct upbeat soul.
However, the soundtrack isn’t without remnants of the first Austin Powers film. It includes classic pop-rock songs from Rolling Stones, Angie Stone, Earth Wind & Fire, Smash Mouth and Ming Tea (Mike Myers own band performing their “Daddy Wasn’t There”). Which offers a nice diversity in genres and compliments the moods of scenes.
Overall, the soundtrack is fun and fitting. It features appearances from members of the cast, sometimes in a musical manner and includes several memorable pop culture songs. If you’re a fan of the 70s and the parodic comedy themes of the film, this soundtrack is probably for you.
