I Am a Bird Now is the second album by American art rock band Antony and the Johnsons. It was released on February 7, 2005 and won the Mercury Prize that year. Antony and the Johnsons are a music group presenting the work of Anohni (formerly known as Antony Hegarty) and her collaborators.
An enrapturing collection of tracks, this album is raw, emotive and so beautiful. The timeless sounds grab your soul and relentlessly drag you in, allowing the listener to feel every note sung with painful longing. The album cover, a 1974 photograph of Andy Warhol superstar, actress and transgender icon Candy Darling on her deathbed, is a poignant glimpse at what lies beneath. The album is a melancholic journey of ghostly hymns sung by an angel with an amazing vibrato and a deep, embedded longing.
Themes of gender fluidity, fears and desires flood the lyrics and are clearly articulated. Instrumentally, the album focuses strongly on the piano with the introduction of various wind and strings, seamlessly complimenting these flawless vocals.
The album contains a number of guest appearances including one by Boy George who collaborates in the moving duet “You Are My Sister” which is about past experiences and memories.
Make sure you have the tissues close at hand and possibly someone special to cuddle as Antony and the Johnsons present an album that will touch your heart so deeply.
