Many genres of music, especially hip-hop, flourish from the use of samples. The act of an artist taking a sound from another recording and putting it into their music can add newfound depth, excitement and in many cases, emotion to the music. Whether it be vocals, instrumentals or percussion, the Avalanches debut album “Since I Left You” has hundreds, possibly thousands of intuitive samples that give the record the means to explore many genres, sounds and emotions.
Though some may see sampling as theft or a lack of creativity, I am inclined to disagree. Sampling allows artists to interpret sounds in a unique way, giving them new meanings and in turn, new life. An artist can take a sound used to evoke a particular emotion and use it to add depth to their track, or they might use sampling as an opportunity to recontextualise an existing sound for their listeners, something which the Avalanches do brilliantly throughout “Since I Left You.” Whether modified with pitch adjustments, effects or simply used in a different setting, the various samples of this album allow the Avalanches to create music they would not have otherwise been able to.
Incredibly intriguing, the soundscapes explored on “Since I Left You” are widespread and diverse, with their unique electronic expression floating between hip-hop and dance. Through hypnotic and engaging loops, the repetition of phrases is entrancing and intoxicating. Many of the vocals featured are percussive, groovy and rhythmic, flowing beautifully with the basslines and percussion. As a result of sampling many sounds from other records, the album is packed with warm vinyl pops and charming imperfections. Though it's well-produced, the album is not over-polished and it retains the warm emotions of its sources.
Originally released more than twenty years ago, this 20th anniversary deluxe edition is packed with more content than ever, and is the perfect way to see for yourself that The Avalanches crafted an album that feels like it’s from another world. Their use of a massive range of samples provides a broad, brilliant spectrum of music. Though they did not ‘create' these sounds, they have used them to create something beautifully heartfelt on “Since I Left You.” A serene blend of sounds, this album has retained is intrigue throughout the years..
9.5/10 - Handsome Will. Oh, did I mention this version includes (amongst others) a remix from the late MF Doom? Because it does, and it’s great.
