Sam Fender - Hypersonic Missiles LP Vinyl Record
Born in 1994, Sam Fender is an English singer-songwriter, musician, and actor. Named one of the BBC's Sound of 2018, he's also won the Critics' Choice Award at the 2019 Brit Award, concreting his place as one of the country's best upcoming artists.
Released in 2019 "Hypersonic Missiles" entered the UK Albums Chart at number one, and has since sold over 100,000 copies. The heartland/indie rock album draws on themes of working-class struggle, blending elements of Americana, post-punk and pop rock. The track "The Borders" is a particular favourite of Fender, who describes it as a "story of two boys growing up together and going their separate ways", with NME calling it "chest-punching". "Dead Boys" explores male suicide and mental health issues, and was written as a reaction to losing a friend to suicide, while "Play God" was described by Fender as being "set in alternate dystopian reality that shares similarities with our own world". Alexis Petridis of The Guardian has praised the album, calling it "perfectly imperfect rock", with AllMusic claiming it as "a fitting soundtrack to the weekend, addressing hopes and frustrations with a persistent intensity and rousing melodies that fall in like with the catharsis at hand".
