Accompanied by three fairy guides, Ofelia ventured into the lair of the Pale Man for her second task, seeing the horrifying paintings of the monstrous creature eating live children one by one, and a long banquet table filled with delicious food. Although she was warned not to consume anything from his table, the temptation proved too great for the starving girl who couldn’t resist eating two grapes, awaking the Pale Man who then devoured two of her fairy guides as the young girl escaped the nightmarish lair.
Although he only appeared in one scene in the film, the Pale Man had a lasting impact with his horrific appearance and the extraordinary performance by the talented Doug Jones, who perfectly captured the fear and pathos of the child eating monster.
